Abstract
The problem of a finite length of cable embedded in an elastic half-space and subjected to external axial load and torque is considered. Special attention is given to the constitutive properties of the cable, which exhibits coupling between extension and torsion. Displacement compatibility between cable and half-space is enforced through the use of approximate bond conditions. Two alternative tangential bond conditions are proposed and comparison is made with certain exact solutions for torsion of embedded rods, to determine the best choice of tangential bond condition for use with the embedded cable problem. An asymptotic analysis gives results for the types of singularities present in the shear tractions at the interface between the cable and half-space. Numerical results are given for the distribution of axial force and torque over the embedded length of cable for steel or nylon cables in a rubber matrix.
