Abstract
This project investigates the “Tacos and Tequila” Party that caused an uproar on campus. Many people accused the Greek system of being racist. The author asks: How does the Greek system relate to, reflect, or represent insensitivity on the University of Illinois campus? On the basis of two interviews, media research, and participant observation, the study illuminates insensitivity problems within the Greek system. The “Tacos and Tequila” event, as well as other themed parties, such as “Cowboys and Indians,” emphasize that racial insensitivities exist and need to be eliminated. The author suggests that this can only be done through education and includes a proposal for continued research.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
This collection examines ways in which the U.S. university and the American college experience are affected by diversity, and difference. In particular, these student projects examine experiences of diversity on campus, including important contemporary social, cultural, and political debates on equity and access to university resources.
