Abstract
The guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is an endemic wild Camellidae of South America. The species is distributed in areas characterized by low precipitation, high winds and low primary productivity.
The objective of this study is to investigate the temperature regulation and the thermal exchanges with the environment in guanacos.
Growth rates and food consumed to achieve mature body weight were measured in captivity. The patterns of normal body temperature and under water restriction in Summer and Winter are analyzed. Surface temperature measured outdoors are used to estimate radiative heat loss. Heat loss by evaporation from the sweat glands and from the respiratory tract are presented. Metabolic rates for two positions are determined by oxygen consumption. Finally, predictions of a model that compares the metabolic rate to different avenues of heat loss, are related to the data presented and to the biology of guanacos.
