Abstract
This project investigates the photographic representation of student athletes and references to their service in the military in the 1940s, specifically during World War II. On the basis of archival, literature, and internet research, the author analyzes the ideological messages associated with these photographs, one in particular, concerning gender, sexuality, and race. The study discusses the war ideology, its links to physical education, and the context of emerging photography. The photograph analyzed conveys strong messages about white, heterosexual masculinity.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
