Abstract
This study traces the developments in baseball since the late 1800s. On the basis of literature and archival research, the author argues that baseball played a vital role in the growth of athletics at the University of Illinois as it developed alongside the University’s own expansion. The study shows that people initially played baseball informally and the first teams were formed in 1879. Baseball was believed to be a gentleman’s sport and was important not only for university students, but also for the surrounding community. The author further discusses the intensification of competitions and institutional investments.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
