Abstract
This project describes the history of the Department of Kinesiology, starting with the establishment of the Department of Physical Education for Women (established in the mid-1970s) and the Department of Physical Education for Men (established in 1895). On the basis of literature, archival, and internet research, the study explores the characteristics of these two separate departments for men and women and the events leading to their merging. Over time, the two departments became increasingly similar and, as a result of both practical and ideological considerations, the merger was proposed in 1970. However, many female faculty members were concerned that male faculty members would be given precedence in matters of rank, teaching assignments, and administrative appointments, causing women to be relegated to a secondary role within the department. They made an effort to ensure equality on the basis of sex.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
