Abstract
This project investigates the history of the intramural program at the University of Illinois. On the basis of internet and archival research (including intramural programs, handbooks, and guides) and interviews, the study finds that it all started with the organization of a few football scrimmage games for a group of students preparing for war back in 1913. The author discusses the context of this beginning and information that challenges the claim that the University of Illinois had the first intramural program in the nation. The study also reviews major developments in the intramural program with regard to health examinations, overall score and champion tables, the inclusion of non-fraternity students, major competitions, numbers of registered teams, and expansions of facilities.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
