Abstract
The purpose of the study was to conduct a two-phase analysis and case study of the Hispanic Student Dropout Program (HSDP) in middle and secondary schools to determine the perceptions of principals, assistant principals, administrators, coordinators, teachers, and teacher aides about the presence and effect of selected program components and attributes upon students' grades, attendance, and attitudes toward school. The goal of Phase I was to identify the program components and attributes perceived by key informants to have the greatest impact upon students. Multiple methodologies and triangulation were employed in Phase I. In Phase II, programs perceived to comprise the exemplary components and attributes were studied intensely and developed as in-depth case studies.
The most salient feature of the HSDP is diversity, which combines a range of routines and balances a variety of approaches to instruction and learning, and incorporates interdisciplinary hands-on activities, small group and individual instruction, and experiential learning which takes place outside of the classroom and school in community settings.
