Abstract
This study examined younger (aged 14-16) and older (aged 17-19) adolescents mothers' relationships with their mothers and peers. Both supportive and problematic aspects of these relationships were explored. First, differences between the two groups of adolescent mothers in their receipt of maternal and peer support and experience of maternal and peer problems were examined. Next, differences within the two groups of adolescent mothers on the maternal and peer relationship variables were investigated. Finally, associations among maternal and peer support and problems, age, economic strain, and depression were explored. Findings are interpreted within the context of existing research and theory on adolescent parenting and normative adolescent development. Directions for future research are discussed.
