Abstract
This project investigates how participants in the university’s community outreach programs evaluate their activities, specifically focusing on Alternative Spring Break. On the basis of 16 interviews, including past and future participants, and data from informational meetings, the research illuminated aspects of the university’s community involvement, the organization of the ASB program, and the experiences for the participants. Most importantly, the project finds that ASB focuses too strongly on personal growth. In addition, the participants often fail to utilize the skills they acquired in the CU community.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
