Abstract
This project aims to answer the following main question: To what extent are varsity athletics at UIUC involved in volunteering in community? And the following subquestions: 1) How many varsity programs are available for volunteering? 2) In what ways are the university’s athletic teams involved in community outreach? 3) Can they use their athlete status to positively influence the community? 4) In what ways are the UIUC football and basketball teams (the major athletic programs at UIUC) active in the community? 5) Do these varsity teams address social and physical issues through volunteer work? 6) How do the volunteer activities of UIUC’s athletic teams compare to other schools? 7) What expectations does the community have of UIUC athletic teams/programs? On the basis of three interviews, participant observation, and the analysis of internet articles, this study shows that student-athletes volunteer substantially in the Champaign-Urbana area. Activities, including visits to schools and hospitals, have a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes and the community as a whole.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
