Abstract
My dissertation has two main goals: to study Spanish modernity in the second half of the 19th century; and to analyze the aesthetics and novels by Angel Ganivet in the context of the Spanish modernity. In order to achieve both goals, I have divided the dissertation into two parts.
Part one is divided into two chapters. Chapter one offers what I consider to be the most important features of European modernity in the last century, giving special attention to the relationships between novel and the modern world. Chapter two applies what has been said in the previous chapter to the Spanish culture and literature from the afore-mentioned period. I deal, among other topics, with krausismo, the naturalist movement, literary and cultural criticism written between 1890-1916 and Spanish novels published in the fin-de-siecle.
In Part two I focus my attention on Angel Ganivet, considered in my dissertation as an example of Spanish modernismo. In the Introduction to this new part I treat Ganivet as well as modernismo not as the beginning of Spanish modernity (as has been thought), but as a phase of the already existing modernity in Spanish culture and society. In chapter three, I summarize Ganivet's ideas on modernity, analyzing also his theories about language, aesthetics and literature. Finally, I close my work with chapters four and five in which I study very closely the two novels written by Ganivet. In this close reading I analyze the techniques employed in both novels, contextualizing both in modernismo as well as in Spanish modernity.
