Abstract
A study of gross motor development in preschool children considered to be at risk for academic failure was conducted. One hundred thirty-seven three, four, and five year old children, enrolled in two sites participated in the study. Gross motor development was assessed by use of the gross motor section of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales. Scores of total gross motor development and development in each of four subscales including Balance, Non-Locomotor, Locomotor, and Receipt and Propulsion of Objects were obtained. Results indicated that the gross motor development of these children was significantly different from what would be expected based on the normal distribution yielded by the norming sample for the test. Over half of the participants scored more than one standard deviation below the mean, with three-quarters of the participants scoring below average. Age and site differences were also found. Implications for children and teachers are discussed.
