Rhetoric 105 is a course designed to introduce the kind of writing that students will be doing as a student at the University of Illinois. Students learned to write in an academic environment and also to think analytically, read critically, and share theirideas openly and actively in an academic community. This course intended to help students to be able to “converse” with various voices from the readings, regardless of whether or not students agree with their opinions. Students also learnedto write a centralized argument that is an in-depth analysis and more than just a summarization. Throughout the course of the semester, students’ writings were reviewed repeatedly by not only myself, but also their peers. Our particular research focus was on how race, culture, ethnicity, and ideology shape life in the space of the university.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
