Abstract
The optimized cluster theory as applied to a one-component classical fluid is discussed in detail. The theory is first applied to the Lennard-Jones fluid. The internal consistency of the theory is discussed. The coexistence curve of the fluid is calculated. It is shown that the theory is quantitatively accurate for all thermodynamic states except those very close to the critical point. The accuracy of the theory outside of the critical region can be used for extrapolation towards the critical point. The extrapolated values of two of the critical exponents are determined; the values are nonclassical and are in good agreement with experiment. In addition to studying the liquid-gas phase transition of the fluid, the equilibrium pair correlation functions are calculated at several states. The theory is also used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of and to study the clustering effect in a mixture of hard spheres and hard spheres with attractive square wells.
