Abstract
Inclusive pion production at large and small transverse momentum PT has been studied in a model of hadrons. The model has the Feynman
diagram structure of the multiperipheral model. The off-shell hadron
amplitudes are taken from field theoretic ideas, the relationship with
electroproduction, factorization of off-shell behavior, a double offshell
enhancing effect, and experimental input. The model is calculated
using numerical techniques. The main results are: 1) the model
gives a good quantitative description of the whole Peyrou plot;
2) large PT scattering is controlled by far off-shell amplitudes and
the power law of PT -8 seen at ISR is in part due to the faster off-shell
falloff of exclusive channels relative to inclusive ones; 3) the steeper
falloff at Fermilab energies is accounted for in a natural way; and
4) there is a threshold in XL = 2PT/[S] beyond which the spectrum is
dominated by fragments of the incident particles.
