Abstract
Transparency and information access are crucial components of a successful democratic society. President-elect Obama has pledged to use all available technologies to make the government more transparent and accountable to its citi- zens. Version control provides a perfect example of one such technology which is useful for fostering accountability, in- creasing public con dence, and encouraging participation. However, as a new technology, the design and implemen- tation of version control raises important issues of public policy.
