This research examines the redevelopment project at Orchard Downs. The authors interviewed eight individuals, and attended various public hearings to better understand the opinions of the local community. The university has awarded four firms $100,000 to create redevelopment plans, which should be presented in the spring 2007. Although no details of the actual plans were yet available, this project examines the advantages and disadvantages of redevelopment, revealing how people and institutions might be affected by this controversial initiative. Issues such as traffic, economic development, community preservation, the nature of student housing, and the relocation of current residents are discussed.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
