Abstract
The Illinois Newspaper Project (INP), based at the University of Illinois since 1996, has made significant contributions to the citizens of Illinois through its work in identifying, cataloguing, and microfilming Illinois newspapers. The University of Illinois has also been making considerable improvements to access and preservation of endangered Illinois newspapers by launching the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection (IDNC). The IDNC is a web-accessible repository containing keyword searchable historic Illinois newspapers digitized from the microfilm. Users can print, download, or e-mail individual articles all free of charge or subscription. It is envisioned that the IDNC will eventually contain digitized historical newspapers originating in towns and cities throughout the state of Illinois.
