This project explores the different stories and perceptions revolving around the University of Illinois Greek system, being the largest in the nation. The author seeks to answer the following questions: What magazines, movies, books or TV shows shaped student ideas of the Greek system? Did students who were interested in the Greek system also have a family member who was involved in the Greek system? How did that influence affect student perceptions of the Greek system? Why did students become members to particular houses? What activities did they do with their house? What is the role of the Greek system in university life? Based on individual interviews, this study concludes that stories surrounding the university’s Greek system influence opinions but do not deter new students from continuing to join fraternities and sororities at the University of Illinois.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
