Abstract
The Imperial County Services Building in El Centro, California, which was damaged
by an earthquake on 15 October 1979 was studied to determine the specific causes of
the failures. The studies included an experimental analysis of the structural system
in the N-S direction. It was concluded that the critical column failures occurred
almost at the end of the strong-motion duration and primarily because of large axial
forces created by the special wall system used for the building.
