- Abstract
- The objective of this study was planned to develop welding procedures that would help to minimize the occurrence of cold cracking, hot cracking, porosity, slag inclusions, and lack of fusion in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) . A literature survey was conducted to identify the welding variables related to each of the discontinuities, and relationships between the welding variables and the occurrence of discontinuities were examined 'in detail. These relationships were then used to establish preliminary welding requirements. A test program was conducted to verify the validity of the preliminary proposed requirements. Recommended welding requirements were then developed on the basis of the preliminary proposed requirements and the test results.
