This project examines the perceptions, realities, and outside influences that shape student’s ideas of college life before entering. The author seeks to answer the following questions: How did students think about college before entering? Are their perceptions different now that they are enrolled in college? What changed? How did students decide to attend the University of Illinois? What were some of the outside influences in their decision? Based on written surveys, this study concludes that students perceptions of college life changes as outside influences, including media or stories told by friends and family, highlight the fun experiences of college life while neglecting to depict an idea for incoming students of the academic work and responsibility that is demanded of them.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
