Abstract
The Mackinaw River originates in Ford County near Sibley and flows in a westerly direction before joining the Illinois River at River Mile 147.7, downstream of Pekin. The boundaries of the Mackinaw River Area Assessment as well as the Mackinaw River Ecosystem Partnership, coincide with the boundaries of the Mackinaw River Basin. The basin is an area of 1,138 square miles in central Illinois and covers parts of six central Illinois counties: Ford, Livingston, Woodford, McLean, Tazewell, and Mason. The majority of the watershed is in the Grand Prairie Division. In this division during presettlement times forests were associated with stream valleys and moraines, while prairie dominated the level to gently rolling landscape. Principal tributaries of the Mackinaw are Panther, Walnut, and Money creeks.
