- The purpose of this report is to describe an experimental investigation concerned with the behavior of a few structural metals under a range of stress conditions applied in times that correspond to the responses which might be excited in ship structures by underwater explosion or air blast loading, or in building structures by earthquake shock or the explosion of a large scale weapon. The engineering aspects of material behavior are emphasized. The tests included uniaxial stress applied in either tension or compression, and flexural stress produced by third-point loading of small beams of rectangular section. The rise times of the loadings were varied from a few milliseconds to several minutes. An attempt is made to correlate the results obtained in the uniaxial stress tests with those obtained in flexure. The applicability of the results of this investigation to the general problem. of determining the behavior of structures under transient dynamic loadings producing extensive inelastic deformations is discussed briefly.
