"Poetry is a journey, one that can be undertaken in the spirit of play and inquiry. Sharon used the concept of exploratory play to create an experiential poetry workshop for children grades 3-5 that would allow for the creative process to ""happen,"" while also nurturing progress in their poems by incorporating the tools they need to create polished work. Her goal was to allow them to create poetry as a team and individually, to introduce the elements and types of poetic tools available to the young poets, explore revision, and employ creative dramatics. Below is her story of how she did that and Sharon’s and Chip’s shared reflections on why it succeeded, drawing on the work of John Dewey and Catherine Garvey."
