- Abstract
- This photo was taken in the west suburb of Champaign on June 19, 2023, using iPhone 7 without any edit. I was a winter wheat breeding intern in a local agricultural company at that time. On that day, we were preparing for crop rotation in a soybean field, during which our task was to completely remove all uncleared wheat seedlings to ensure the genetic purity of next year’s breeding. One person followed the others in a John Deere tractor, and we used the bucket as a trash can so we could keep moving forward instead of constantly walking far to throw away uprooted plants. Though technology has eased farmers’ tasks, delicate work still requires to be done manually. During a break, our leader regretfully told me that a research team specializing in agricultural robotics once attempted to achieve automation in plant height measurement in our field, but ended up with robots stuck in mud. This became my motivation in research for seeking solutions to solve automation issues and exploring association between data and truths in agriculture. After all, as you can see, the colors of the field are always so appealing and full of vitality.
