Abstract
This thesis offers a survey of selected lieder on nature, art and travel in an interpretive study exploring the artistry of Fanny’s lieder through a textual and musical lens as poetry and music are intertwined. After a general overview of lieder in the nineteenth century, aspects of performance practice are discussed, addressing the use of vibrato, portamento, and rhythmic alteration, followed by a stylistic analysis of fourteen lieder composed between 1822 and 1847. Common themes in Fanny’s lieder are explored, including her choice of texts with rich visual color, modulation at key points, and the use of chromaticism and unexpected dissonance for tone painting. The role of the piano is also considered along with the motivic interplay between the voice and the accompaniment. Each section includes performance suggestions for the singer.
