- Abstract
- The Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely used for location-based services and navigation applications. However, GPS signals can be denied under circumstances, where adversarial individuals intended to reduce positioning of individuals. In this thesis, we explore an approach for global positioning using common terrestrial radio. Direction finding using the direction of arrival (DOA) is a promising approach for non-directional beacon (NDB) based positioning. However, accurate DOA estimation requires precise timing information, which can be challenging to obtain in NDB systems. To overcome this challenge, we propose a clock synchronization method for radio receivers based on crosscorrelation of received signals. This method allows the receiver to estimate the time of arrival of signals with high accuracy, enabling accurate DOA estimation even in the presence of noise and interference. In addition, we investigate the potential of direction finding using angle-of-arrival (DOA) for NDB-based positioning. We propose a DOA-based algorithm that can estimate the direction of arrival of NDB signals with high accuracy, even in the presence of multipath propagation and interference. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our proposed approach using real-world experiments involving positioning/flying a drone. We believe that our approach can be a valuable addition to the existing navigation and locationbased services, especially in denied environments.
