- Abstract
- Emerging technologies such as fifth generation wireless (5G), the Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual reality (VR) will generate explosive amounts of data in the network and increase computing, storage and performance demand in data centers. Increase channel capacity from 100 GEto400GEcanbesolved via advanced modulation solution. Non-return-Zero (NRZ) and four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) are two modulation technologies that enable 400 GE. In this research, simulations were designed to investigate the role of components in the communication channel. It was found that the channel exerted impairments on the signal during transmission, and equalizers could compensate for the impairments. With the same channel simulation setup, it was demonstrated that PAM4 could transfer data with less bandwidth, but at the cost of a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Apart from the simulation setup, testing setups were designed to study the performance of each component in the communication system. Firstly, on-wafer probing was combined with Sparameter testing using a Vector network analyzer (VNA), and channel simulation was performed to evaluate the quality of the device-under-test (DUT). Secondly, the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) was adopted as the transceiver, and an optical link was built to test the performance of the VCSEL device in transforming PAM4 and NRZ signals.
