Black Male Student Perspective
Abstract
This is a qualitative study interviewing high school special education teachers and Black males with learning disabilities or emotional disabilities in self-contained special education settings.Three questions were asked: What were the experiences of Black male high school students in self-contained classrooms? What did they identify as significantly impacting their schooling? How were they prepared for post-high school? Interviews and observations took place that were then coded for emotions and patterns. Results from the study found school structural issues to be a leading cause of student placement and barriers. Students were placed in restricted learning environments without understanding why or the chance to be in general education. Students experienced racial discrimination in various aspects of the school. There was limited post-secondary exposure within the classrooms.
