Abstract
Common lands play a critical role in the social, economic and environmental health of communities. In urbanizing areas of Karnataka, village commons lands intended for grazing cattle and for subsistence farming have been increasingly taken over by alternate land uses. This project examines the relationship between these changing land relations and the digitization of land records, which ostensibly aims to enhance transparency, streamline property titling, and reduce bureaucratic discretion in land governance.
