This document includes research on the extensive legislative histories of the Illinois Natural History Survey, Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Illinois State Geological Survey, Illinois State Water Survey, and Illinois Sustainable Technology
Center. This in-depth study provides a detailed account of the development, evolution, and transformation into today’s Illinois scientific surveys, which reside within the research home of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This study concludes that the ever-changing needs of society have been the driving force behind the mutual evolution of science and public policy that has transformed
the Illinois scientific surveys. As society’s needs have changed, science and public policy have evolved to meet those needs.
