- Abstract
- The significant increase in retractions of scientific publications is undeniable. Previous studies have shown that retracted publications receive minimal acknowledgment as being retracted in postretraction citations. A specific case study even suggested a potential correlation between poor retraction indexing and the inadvertent inclusion of retracted articles in post-retraction citation (Schneider et al., 2020). Recently, we assessed retraction indexing quality across four multidisciplinary data sources: Crossref, Retraction Watch, Scopus, and Web of Science. Our study demonstrated that the retraction status of publications is not consistent across all the four data sources. That is, when a publication was covered by multiple sources, sometimes one said it had been retracted and another said that the publication had NOT been retracted. Of the 49,924 publications with DOIs indexed as retracted in one or more of Crossref, Retraction Watch, Scopus, and Web of Science, 21% publications had such disagreement in retraction indexing (Schneider et al., 2023). Building upon our past work, we are incorporating a wider range of subject-specific sources. The sources include the Association of Computing Machinery Digital Library, Compendex, Crossref, GeoBASE, GeoRef databases, IEEE Xplore, Inspec, the National Technical Information Service, PubMed, Retraction Watch, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science. Our study aims to (i) update the retracted publication union list, incorporating data from multidisciplinary and subject-specific sources; and (ii) identify errors associated with retraction indexing. This project will result in a wide-scale comparison of retraction indexing which can be used to inform future analysis of retracted publications.
