Abstract
• Conducted Year 5 of the freshwater mussel population study in the Kishwaukee River
▷ 42.5 person-hrs sampling with an average of 12 mussels collected per hr
▷ Captured 497 live individuals of 14 species across the 4 sections
• Collected and PIT-tagged 57 Black Sandshells (Ligumia recta), a statethreatened species
• Collected and PIT-tagged 38 species of greatest conservation need: 26 Elktoes
(Alasmidonta marginata), 11 Flutedshells (Lasmigona costata), and 1 Ellipse
(Venustaconcha ellipsiformis)
• Most common species were Muckets (Actinonaias ligamentina) and Plain
Pocketbooks (Lampsilis cardium)
▷ Monitored PIT-tagged animals in July and August 2019
• Did not conduct the annual survey due to the Covid-19 pandemic
• Monitored PIT-tagged animals in August and September 2020 and surveyed with the
floating antenna via kayak for emigrated individuals
• For Black Sandshells, CJS models estimated apparent survival at 98% and individual
detection probabilities between 0.09 and 0.41.
• POPAN models of Black Sandshell estimated gross population size for females as 100
and males 105 within the study area at I-90.
