Abstract
Zhou Long's opera Madame White Snake, as a successful representative of the
fusion of Chinese and Western opera, has been continuously performed since its premiere in 2010 and remains recognized by audiences 14 years later. Yet, there is a scarcity of in-depth and comprehensive research discussing the application of Chinese
elements in various aspects of this opera. This article aims to explore Zhou Long's
presentation and techniques of innovating Chinese traditional music and culture by analyzing the creative background of Madame White Snake and the selection of
Chinese elements. It also compares two performance versions of the opera produced by different teams, discussing the opera's compatibility with various presentation
methods. My research hopes to inspire more musicians to draw inspiration from this
opera, to broaden the creative domain of Chinese-Western fusion music, and to help readers gain a multifaceted and specific understanding of the Chinese elements within
this opera.
