Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between systems of oppression and which queer identities are most popularly represented in literature through a literary and women and gender studies approach. Additionally, it makes a connection between the lack of diverse or intersectional representation of LGBTQIA+ people in literature and anti-queer violence. The popularity of Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli serves as an example to argue that White, cisgender, gay male characters dominate queer novels as protagonists compared to queer protagonists that do not fall under these categories. Even if queer literature featuring these diverse LGBTQIA+ identities exists, it is not positively consumed by mainstream cishet audiences to the same extent as novels with White, cisgender, gay male characters. To prove this, this essay conductions explorations of how racial, sapphic/lesbian, transgender, nonbinary and intersex identities are represented using literary analysis and queer analysis/ discourse.
