Abstract

This paper presents part of a dissertation research investigating the information seeking and sharing behavior among doctoral peers. Data were collected by conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews with twenty doctoral students in social sciences and humanities disciplines. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and Wilson’s Information Behavior Model were used as guides for data collection and analysis. It is shown that doctoral peers go to one another for information, but environmental and personal factors may impact which peer they choose. This paper focuses on environmental factors (i.e., access, resource availability). Conceptually, the findings expand on SCT’s environmental factors and establish a link between information science and the theory. These show a similar pattern to Wilson’s factors. For institutions, the findings could help them better understand the information behavior of their doctoral students and create environments that foster information seeking and sharing among them.
