Abstract
TikTok, a prominent social media app and the most downloaded application globally in 2020 and 2021, offers a diverse range of short-form videos such as product reviews, interviews, commentary, reaction, explainer, and how-to tutorials. Education Week reports U.S. college students between four to eighteen years old spend an average of ninety-one minutes per day on TikTok and one in four students report using TikTok for educational purposes. Despite research on the popularity and variety of content on TikTok, there is a lack of comprehensive studies analyzing the pedagogy of popular educational videos in TikTok. The paper provides a literature review and preliminary analysis of the pedagogy used to create popular educational content in TikTok. The researchers identified several common techniques used to engage audiences in educational content such as authenticity, visual aids, humor, aesthetics, and oral presentation style. The insights gained from this research can be used to align online faculty video production techniques more closely with student expectations of short-form video, making the educational experience more relatable and engaging for students.
