Abstract
Although Open Access (OA) publishing is considered a positive development by nearly all members of the scholarly communication community involved in facilitating access to scholarship, it has not been fully embraced by those who conduct and publish research. Prior studies have established that researchers in specific disciplines are more likely to publish their work in OA venues, improving our understanding of the academic cultural norms that might promote or inhibit OA publishing practices. This project looks at rates of OA publishing at specific colleges and universities in the United States as a first step in determining which institutional and structural norms and incentives might encourage researchers to select OA venues for publishing their research.
