- Abstract
- The digital transformation sweeping across the UK presents new opportunities for active and healthy ageing, with digital health provisions and internet usage at the forefront. This study explores how older adults (aged 65 and above) interact with digital technology and the subsequent impact on their social participation, overall health, and well-being. The study diverges from the well-trodden path of enhancing digital skills to bridge the digital divide and instead delves into the underexplored terrain of potential adverse consequences associated with increased digital engagement among older people. Employing qualitative methods and the framework of social practice theory, this study uncovers the intricate connection between active ageing and digital inclusion initiatives. Digital tools offer solutions to loneliness and access to valuable information, yet they also pose risks to mental and physical well-being, leading to concerns about social isolation. Offline interactions continue to play a pivotal role in shaping their perception of active and healthy ageing, as older people observe intergenerational disparities in digital engagement and express anxieties regarding the rapid erosion of cultural values due to technological advancements. In light of these findings, this study advocates a holistic approach to addressing the digital divide via the lens of practice theory. It underscores the need to comprehend the interconnectedness of access, skill, and usage in digital engagement among older adults. Such a people-centric approach aligns with the concept of active and healthy ageing, urging for adaptable strategies to promote the well-being of older people in the digital age.
