Abstract
This paper focuses on the persuasion process of health rumor refuting information and the change of users’ adoption of the information. Based on the framework of Persuasive Communication Theory, this study adopted the information characteristics (information quality, information sources, information presentation methods and information framework) and user characteristics (health information literacy, Information involvement) as factors influencing the users’ attitude potentially and, accordingly, constructed a concept model. Controlled experiment and questionnaire were used for data collection, and PLS-SEM and fsQCA were applied for data analysis. This research has found that perceived credibility fully mediated the impact of information quality and source on the adoption of refutation information. The persuasive effect of negative frame and video presentation was better than that of positive frame and text presentation. High health information literacy populations relied on information sources to determine information credibility, while low literacy populations relied on dual pathways. Three modes achieving high persuasive effects on refuting rumors were discovered, which were the information- driven mode, the motivation-driven mode, and the multiple driven mode.
