Abstract

Online audio materials are important sources of information, and metadata is necessary for their discoverability. However, the quality of metadata that represents digital audio resources is not yet systematically emphasized in metadata training. Part of the reason for this omission is lack of research generating empirical qualitative data on audio metadata quality overall, and particularly in the Arabian Gulf. Our study addresses the need for such data by evaluating the accuracy and completeness of Dublin Core metadata records that describe Arabic-language audio recordings. The records in our data set are created by Kuwaiti Library and Information Science students who are learning how to apply metadata to facilitate in-formation access. Empirical data obtained through this analysis and presented below allows assessing preparedness of beginning information professionals to create comprehensive and accurate metadata that supports audio resources discovery in digital repositories.
