Abstract
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) maintains a global presence in international exchange, from receiving incoming students, scholars, and professionals to sending enrolled students overseas (study abroad). This dissertation focuses on the latter. Using 275 program descriptions, the researcher used communication theory to show how perceived student motivations were represented in the recruitment language and similarities and differences across themes. UIUC’s program descriptions utilized rhetorical devices to highlight discourses of sensationalism, tourism, collaboration in the present versus relationship-building in the future, privilege of travel, global citizenship, and distinct types of learning.
