Abstract
With the recent trend in the nuclear power domain of shifting from analog to digital systems, digital twins (DTs) and DT-enabling technologies have received significant attention due to their potential capabilities, such as improving operational efficiency and reliability, enhancing resource allocation, refining maintenance scheduling, and reducing costs of design, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. To accelerate the deployment of DTs and DT-enabling technologies and to realize their potential benefits in existing nuclear power plants (NPPs) and advanced reactors is critical to identify and evaluate key challenges associated with this deployment. One such key challenge concerns the capability to realistically capture/model potential human-DT interactions and their impact on plant safety risk. The work presented in this paper is the first to tackle this challenge and is part of a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)-sponsored project entitled “Integrated Modeling of Human Interactions with Hardware and Software in Digital Twins to Support Risk-informed Regulation for Existing Plants and Advanced Reactors.” Particularly, this paper reports progress on a methodology to model human-DT interactions with the primary focus on DT-supported maintenance at NPPs.
