Abstract

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy conducted a state-wide survey of PFAS concentrations in Michigan shallow soils of forested areas. One sample was collected from state-owned land in each county, totaling 83 samples. At least one PFAS compound was observed in all but one of the 83 samples, with total PFAS concentrations ranging from non-detect to 2.016 µg/kg (dry weight). PFOS was generally detected at the highest concentrations, ranging from non-detect to 0.88 µg/kg, followed by PFBA, with concentrations ranging from non-detect to 0.69 µg/kg, and PFOA, with concentrations ranging from non-detect to 0.36 µg/kg. The sum of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) was higher than the sum of perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in most samples, while there were no detections of fluorotelomer sulfonic acids, fluoroalkylether compounds, or perfluoroalkane sulfonamides in any samples. A statistical analysis was completed to determine if there were similarities between samples and determine if there were correlations between PFAS and TOC, moisture, percent clay, and metals. Samples located in northern Michigan were similar in composition and concentration, while samples from southern Michigan varied significantly in composition and concentration. Sampling locations were compared to known areas of PFAS contamination and other potential sources.
