- Abstract
- Water samples from 450 homes with private wells were collected and analyzed for per- and polyfluoroalkly substances (PFAS) and other water quality parameters during the summer of 2022. The homes with private wells were selected in three steps: 1) the state was divided into 450 equal area grid cells, 2) for each grid cell a list of wells with an available Well Construction Report meeting criteria focused on shallow groundwater (water table and casing depth) was compiled, and 3) for each grid cell, voluntary participation was offered to residents based on random selection from each list. In addition to analysis for 44 PFAS, samples were analyzed for major anions and cations, metals, herbicide metabolites and human waste indicators (e.g. artificial sweeteners, pharmaceuticals). This presentation will characterize the prevalence of PFAS using the categories of no detections, detections at relatively low levels, and detections at higher levels, with additional evaluation of possible sources using the other water quality parameters. Data evaluation will also focus on concentrations typical of ambient groundwater. As of the time of this writing, one project sample has been placed outside of the category of ambient groundwater, with a PFOA concentration of 11,300 ng/L.
