Abstract
Louis-Nicolas Clérambault was one of the most influential composers of early
eighteenth-century French cantatas. A pivotal work, L’Amour piqué par une Abeille, is
significant because it was composed between the musical reign of Lully and Rameau. During
this time, taste evolved to integrate musical characteristics from both French and Italian national styles. L’Amour piqué une abeille was one of Clérambault’s first attempts to meld these two distinct national styles within the context of the cantata genre. Identification of these traits, along with historical investigation, contextualization within national musical trends, and discussion of contemporary performance practices provides the backdrop for a critical commentary and an edition of Clérambault’s cantata, with the aim of guiding today’s performers toward a historically based interpretation.
