The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted all aspects of normal life, including legal proceedings. As courts all over the United States shifted from in-person operations to hastily designed virtual proceedings, much changed. Research on how experiences with the justice system and case outcomes were altered by this disruption is early and ongoing, but some results are emerging, suggesting that online hearings had both pros and cons (Mazzone et al. 2022; NCSC 2021; TACJ 2022). Indeed, such work is not merely backwardlooking and of mainly historical interest, because many jurisdictions, having seen more gains than losses, are now making online court proceedings permanent for some matters.
