Many of the naval engagements between Union and Confederate gunboats and ships are well known (e.g., Battles of Mobile Bay, Charleston Harbor, capture of New Orleans, and the attempts to capture Vicksburg, among others. Those engagements involved large numbers of vessels and men, with many casualties. There were many other lesser-known engagements that were of short duration or involving fewer vessels. However, for the crewmen involved in these engagements, and especially for those that were killed or wounded, the encounters were as perilous as the more well-known engagements.
